Oneupweb : It Keeps Getting Brighter

Posted by Hillary on May 4, 2010 at 10:35 am

I’ve only just come on board with the Oneupweb team, and I already feel excited with all of the recognition the company continually receives. Corp! Magazine has recently named Oneupweb as a Michigan Economic Bright Spot. Oneupweb was awarded with this title because of their growth, success and goal of helping other Michigan businesses.

Oneupweb has definitley followed through with their mission of giving aid to Michigan businesses. The One for the Road: Operation Michigan tour is a perfect example of how Oneupweb has lended a helping hand to business owners, executives and entrepreneurs. Piling into a 1970’s RV for a  humanitarian road trip was certainly an adventure. Oneupweb Founder and CEO, Lisa Wehr, and staff traveled to numerous Michigan cities and provided free digital marketing consulting services to individuals across the state. This thoughtful act must have been a powerful, fun and rewarding experience—one I hope to be a part of in the future.

As a 2010 Michigan Economic Bright Spot, Oneupweb will continue to brighten the state while helping other businesses shine!

Oneupweb : 2010 Communitas Award

Posted by Maureen on April 20, 2010 at 10:17 am

We just announced that Oneupweb has been awarded a 2010 Communitas Award. And among all the awards we’ve won over the years, I have to say that this is my favorite—simply because of the principle behind it. Companies who are chosen to be honored with this award are said to exhibit the spirit of communitas, a Latin word that means people coming together for the good of a community. Oneupweb was honored for our One for the Road: Operation Michigan tour.

This tour was a lot of work! We were literally sitting around one day, talking about the terrible Michigan economy and wondering what we could do to help other businesses continue to stay in the state. That’s when our CEO, Lisa Wehr, got her crazy idea. Basically, seven of us would pack into her 1970’s motorhome and drive around the state, offering our consulting services for free to any Michigan business that met us along the way. Simply because it was what we could do to help.

That idea became a reality and one trip that I will never forget. And all of that work? It was worth it to see business owners and professionals who participated leave with a strategic plan, and more importantly, a little more hope. Of course, we had a little fun along the way (in true Oneupweb style).

But it wasn’t about Oneupweb. It was about one Michigan business reaching out to help others. It was about coming together for the good of the community. It was about “communitas”.

We just announced that Oneupweb has been awarded a Best of Show for our One for the Road: Operation Michigan microsite by the Great Lakes Bay Region 31st Annual ADDY® Competition. And that’s not all—we also won a Judges’ Choice award for our stop-motion video, How We Grow Brands, and two additional Gold ADDYs for our augmented reality piece, the StraightUpRocket, and our corporate website, OneUpWeb.com.

Of course, we’re thrilled! But the Best of Show award means a little bit more to us, as we all put our blood, sweat and tears into the One for the Road: Operation Michigan campaign. This was truly about giving back to others, inspiring hope and camaraderie in a state that was facing the worst of the economic downturn. (For anyone who needs a refresher, we basically set out on a five-day, four-city tour of the state, offering our services for free to any Michigan business that met us along the way.) It’s amazing to stop and think of the number of people that we talked with on this trip, the number of businesses we helped and the positive aftermath that we’ve seen with those companies as a result.

There’s something we all tend to do, and that’s to put our heads down, get to work and almost forget about where we’ve been. This award serves as a reminder of what we accomplished, and gets our creative juices flowing. What will we come up with next? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out.

One for the Road: The Recap

Posted by Maureen on August 24, 2009 at 2:31 pm

This morning, my heart was broken. I had to hand over my beautiful MacBook, and return to my regular desk computer. That’s right, the One for the Road: Operation Michigan tour has come to an end, and so has my love affair with one of the greatest technological inventions of this century.

Computers aside, the road trip was a fantastic success! We started off in Ann Arbor, meeting and talking with some great local businesses like Dress Up Time. They even brought us a present. (Thanks Dress Up Time! This picture will live in infamy.) We also had the chance to meet up with Jonathan and Steven from Nology Design and had a great conversation with a local foods kitchen, among many others. The main concerns or areas needing help in Ann Arbor, were, well, there were no main areas! Every person who visited us or called our hotline had a different need. From basic SEO to viral social media campaigns, we talked about it all. And a friend brought us lunch from Zingerman’s, including some delicious cookies.

Beep! Beep!

Beep! Beep!

From Ann Arbor we all packed back into the motor home and headed to Lansing. And waiting for us was a gentleman who had traveled four hours to have us help him with his online marketing. It meant a lot to us to be able to provide him with some good SEO advice. We also spoke with a few nonprofits that needed help bringing fans into their social media sites, accountants and other small business owners. (When we said we had a range of different businesses, we meant it!).

Grand Rapids started off with a little bit of rain. Which was scary, because we actually hadn’t reserved a shelter. Luckily, the rain brought in some cancellations and we were able to secure a roof over our heads. And good thing we did! The Duck Pond Pavilion at John Ball was hoppin’ (flappin’ and quackin’ just didn’t seem to fit). From landscape architects to home day care, business big and small stopped by for some online marketing advice and a chance to ride in the giant swan boats. (The advice they got, the boats stayed chained up.)

Then we were home. It went so fast. And we didn’t even have time to breathe, as Traverse City was our busiest day of the entire trip. It was all hands on deck at Oneupweb, literally, as we had to call down additional employees to help out. Fair trade markets, local restaurants, lawyers, entrepreneurs, logo wear, chiropractors, dentists (my dentist was there and reminded me that I need to schedule a cleaning), bike shops, cherry products, motor products, the list goes on and on.

Curious who stopped by to see us at each of our stops? We’re working on a Oneupweb roadshow map. It’s no where near complete, but check it out for a quick glimpse of some outstanding Michigan businesses.

Okay, so what did we learn? Teal likes hot peppers, Rob doesn’t sleep, Vern likes the cameras, Dave can blow a bigger bubble than Maureen, Leah is awful at picking restaurants and Lisa is truly relentless in anything she does.

Oh, you mean about businesses in Michigan, and their online marketing needs? Well, I can tell you that everyone has an online marketing need. Whether you are actively (or sort of) engaging in SEO, PPC and Social Media, or even if you are still designing your website. The time is now to get involved in online marketing, expanding your reach and continuing to ensure your business thrives.

So would we do it again? Just let me know when Pearl (the motor home) is gassed up and ready to go. But this time, I’ll let the group buy the 2 foot long, 3 pound bag of Twizzlers.

One for The Road: Traverse City

Posted by Maureen on August 21, 2009 at 2:02 pm

It feels good to be back home!

I’ve loved touring the state, meeting new people and learning about their different businesses. But they do say, home is where the heart is. And even though rainy weather was waiting to greet us, I think all of our hearts lifted a bit as we pulled into the Oneupweb parking lot last night (and I think everyone was looking forward to sleeping in their own beds!).

Currently I’m standing in the Oneupweb lunchroom, and as I take a look around I see that every table is full! In fact, we have had such a great turnout in Traverse City for our One for the Road: Operation Michigan tour, we had to pull additional employees to help out. And so far, everyone is loving it. These are businesses that we are all familiar with and see around town. And it feels to great to be able to help them continue to be successful.

I’m going to have to keep this blog post short because we need every seat and every computer we have. But if you have some extra time, please check out the One for the Road photo set on Flickr.

Thanks! We’ll see you on the road.
