YouTube Flips For April Fool's Day

Posted by Leah Singer on April 2, 2009 at 11:51 am

YouTube issued a new blog entry yesterday about its new ‘roll out’ for the featured videos section of the homepage.

“Today, we are beginning to roll out the new watch page. The update will begin with videos on the home page — go to www.youtube.com, click on any video featured, and you’ll get dizzy with excitement.”

As a little April Fool’s Day prank, YouTube flipped all the content upside down to bring some of that ‘dizzying excitement’ to your day.

Some commenters on the YouTube blog said it was a cute prank:

“That was funny. I need a good laugh in the morning, especially because it took so long for my sister to figure it out. Lol”

Others lashed out at YouTube for taking the time to create April Fool’s pranks and not focusing on more work-related issues. One commenter stated:

“So you have time to play pranks and you even have time to put links explaining the April Fool’s joke and how to fix it, but you don’t have time to put a link to the youtube blog when you make changes to the site?”

I thought it was a cute little prank; my only issue was I noticed there were a few ’sensitive’ videos listed on the featured section that I thought shouldn’t be part of an April Fool’s joke – like a video about Natasha Richardson’s ski accident (not really knee-slapping content). Besides that, it was pretty clever. Your thoughts?
